I think we've decided it's time to upgrade our camera. Rob and I were researching some 'technical' aspects of what we want (focal point, etc) tonight. After about 10 minutes of reading sentences like this:
Rob said: Melissa, I'd rather be watching Hannah Montana than doing this right now.
Enough said. We're not researching anymore tonight.

hahaha i can just see robs eyes glaze over at the mention of "mathematics of potics" hahaha
i LOVE mine and i highly recommend it (nikon D5000) - i did all that research (i researched for about 3 months - maybe 6 months actually).
if having video isn't important, the D3000 is just the same without video.
i have a friend of a friend (who is a photographer) who is selling their barely used D3000 for $400 with the 18-55mm lens.
that being said, i know that sony has some good cameras too.
if you have any questions, let me know! i may have already asked them to the people at wolf camera! i know they were tired of hearing from me and half-way relieved i finally bought one...
just to clarify, the first time i went in wolf camera, i already knew what i wanted but i played "stupid" to see what the guy recommended - and he said that nikon was the best digital camera rightnow. sony was "up and coming" and canon was the worst for the money. something about image quality. i knew i wanted a nikon, so i just let him go from there, but anyway, i'm not sure of sony prices, but it may be something to consider.
something else BIG to consider is what kind of lens you can get and how much they cost. i.e. nikon cameras ONLY fit nikon lenses - and the D5000 body doesn't have an autofocus motor in it - so you have to buy an autofocusing lens (which isn't hard to do since most nikon lenses have the AF in it).
so when you consider prices, look also at lenses if you plan on investing in more of them down the road. and ALSO make sure you buy a UV filter for your each lens you get/buy, put it on there and leave it on there forever. it protects it. on wolf camera, they have packages with nikon where you get 2 lenses in the KIT - it is a great deal. online, it is no shipping or tax. if there is a store near you, you can take photography classes for free (which i'm doing now).
just saying.
We also have a Nikon D5000 and LOVE it. Love it, Love it! I did quite a bit of research as well...and have been very happy with my choice! GOOD LUCK!
